Pool Heater
Automatic (using Home Assistant) vs Manual
The pool heater can now be controlled remotely from Home Assistant, using the big thermometer on the Pool tab.
There's a big switch on the top of the heater that says “Remote Control” and “Manual”. If you change the switch's position, the heater needs to be turned off and on for it to take effect (see below).
Remote Control Setting
In this setting, the heater is controlled by Home Assistant and turns the heater on and off to keep the water at the temperature set in Home Assistant. Important: In order for this to work, the temperature set point on the heater (controlled by the arrows on the heater) needs to be set to a temperature (much) higher than the Home Assistant temperature. I recommend 87.
In the Remote Control setting, the “Pool On” button on the heater stops working because the heater is being remotely controlled. For safety reasons the “Off” button still works but that will get HA and the heater out-of-sync, so I suggest turning the heater off using HA.
NB: Sometimes the heater will stop working. Home Assistant has no way of knowing this, so if you don't see the pool water temperature rising, check the heater physically and use the section below to troubleshoot.
NB: When leaving the house, please leave the heater in Remote Control, turned off via HA. This is so the next person can turn the heater on remotely before they come up so the pool is ready on arrival.
Manual Setting
In this setting, the heater reverts to the original mechanism, where everything is controlled at the control panel.
Turning the heater off and on
This is the same as “unplugging” and “plugging in” the heater to “reboot” it. Open the breaker box mounted on the wood post, flip the rightmost breaker down, wait 10 seconds, and flip it back up.
Troubleshooting
There are two lights on the panel that indicate a problem. One is “Service Heater” and one is “Service System”
Service Heater
Sometimes the heater gets tired and flips into this mode, usually when it's been on for a few days straight. Turn the heater off and on, and see if it starts working again. If not, something really is wrong and you need to call Diamanti.
Service System
This usually means that there isn't enough water flowing through the heater, which is usually caused by a clogged filter. Backwashing the filter usually solves this problem. Backwashing the filter is straightforward and takes just a few minutes, instructions are on the Pool Page. If you're not comfortable doing this, call Diamanti. If backwashing the filter doesn't work, you need to call Diamanti.
